Today has seen the passing of Roger Ebert, the most famous of film critics. His influence has been enormous; his writing was personal and witty but still intellectual; his work with Gene Siskel on the At the Movies review program brought critical discourse on film to an unprecedented audience; his highlighting of neglected cinema was groundbreaking for a mainstream critic.
As a fan of lists, I have slowly worked through the films featured in Ebert's "Great Movies" reviews. I have slowly kept pace at about the halfway mark. Now the list and the rest of his legacy is set, and we all have the daunting task of catching up with Roger Ebert.
